#Finnterns: Goodbye, Susanna!

Time flies by when you're having fun. But, it also means we have to say goodbye to our very first intern of 2019. Susanna's time at the Embassy was all-encompassing. One day it was attending political forums, the next identifying opportunities for Finnish companies, but let's not forget the chance to play mölkky in between. We already miss her offbeat humour, relaxed approach and infectious fervour. Best of luck Susanna!

Before applying for this internship, what did you know about Australia?

I had an alright idea about Australia before arriving in the country. This is my second time in Australia in just 12 months. The first time I was here for a month to meet my Australian friends and barely ventured outside of two cities. It is incredible how even if you know about the distances in Australia, you really realise it once you actually are here. I have always gotten well along with Australians, I like the way of communicating with 50% kindness and 50% banter.

What were your responsibilities at the Embassy of Finland in Canberra?

My responsibilities at the Embassy were diverse. I attended meetings, wrote political and business reports, did briefings for the foreign ministry and helped arrange a few fun events. I especially enjoyed the business side of working at the Embassy, which was very different from what I have done before. When starting the internship at the Embassy you go through with your supervisor your goals for the time being. This helps you get the most out of your time here.

Team Finland at Multicultural Festival

With just over three months in Australia, how has this country surprised you?

I’m originally from an area called Birdhill (Lintuvaara) in Finland. As the name suggests, Birdhill has an unbelievable amount of birds. I have been waking up every day in Canberra to the cockatoos and parrots in our back yard. Feels like home. On the way to work, I see tens of kangaroos.

You must have many memories, but tell me, what will you remember most?

Nature and friends. I have always considered myself more of a city person but I have noticed how I have enjoyed nature and wildlife more and more. I loved to hike the mountains, learned how to camp and developed an obsession for sunscreen. I have been so lucky to have such wonderful friends to experience these things with.

During your time in Australia, what have you missed from Finland?

Dip mix that you dip your chips in. I love dip.

How has this internship helped you for future roles?

I have experienced a whole variety. When I arrived, I focused on public diplomacy and politics but after a couple of months, I noticed how much I enjoyed focusing on business, which would normally be a bit out of my comfort zone as a political science student. I just had an interview last week for my future role.

Persuading Australians to study in Finland

What advice would you give to other Finnish students considering an internship with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs?

Do it! An internship at the Finnish Embassy is rewarding, fun and educational. I encourage you to be open-minded to learn and get involved in things you have not done before but overall the internship is customised to match your strengths and interests.
